ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
"I use traditional styles & move beyond them to create my own way of art, composition and moods to introduce a sense of freedom, life and harmony. Free from the rules and constraints of the past. I emphasize emotions in my paintings, achieved through the harmony of colours. I paint the way I feel and allow the appreciative eye to interpret my works according to whatever it sees.
Others might not, see my work as I intend, but thats fine with me. Reading a painting is personal.
Some call it Japanese & some Chinese. For me Art is universal & goes beyond categorization.
True art comes from within and should have depth to it.
Nature is my guide, life is my teacher & I am a master of myself. (Shu Jin Ko)
I use my sharp observation to study the spirit of flora & fauna, animals and their behaviour.
I find inspiration almost everywhere, during my daily life; travels, in the works of other masters,
but especially in nature.
Sometimes I dream about the subject and visualize it in my mind. Then sometimes the revelation comes to me in a dream about the subject or painting to be made. Then the driving force (Ki/Chi) of inspiration & life triggers me to put that picture onto paper. Some of my paintings contain birds among other broad subjects.
To me they symbolize the essence of lifebeauty, harmony, and freedom. And of course, romance. When I look at a bird in flightfree to go wherever it wants dreaming is easy. But even then, I blend East and West: the delicacy of Japanese/Chinese brush painting with the excitement of Western art & technics.
Besides high quality professional materials I sometimes experiment with new methods and media. I like to try new things new subjects, new techniques.
But I always paint the way I want and most of the time it's related to nature.
I believe in following my inspiration, wherever it leads to, a personal never-ending task.
I'm always somewhere but I never arrive. "
